A new venture, Popular Demand, has been unveiled by industry veterans Jon Leland and Ivan Askwith. This studio and technology entity is poised to revolutionize content creation and distribution by deeply engaging with specific fan communities. Their mission is to identify and nurture projects that resonate with dedicated audiences, offering a fresh model for financing and creative control across various entertainment mediums, from cinematic releases to interactive gaming experiences.

In-Depth Look at Popular Demand's Inaugural Endeavors and Vision

On October 20, 2026, a significant announcement marked the emergence of Popular Demand, spearheaded by Jon Leland, previously a strategic leader at Kickstarter, and Ivan Askwith, formerly heading Digital Media at Lucasfilm. This dynamic duo has initiated a novel studio and technology firm focused on empowering creators by leveraging the passion of fandoms. Their innovative approach involves developing, financing, producing, and distributing content across a broad spectrum of entertainment, including films, television series, publications, games, and live events. The studio's inaugural project is a neo-camp, dark comedy-drama titled “Fucktoys,” directed by and starring Annapurna Sriram, alongside Sadie Scott, Damian Young, Brandon Flynn, and François Arnaud, with a theatrical release anticipated soon.

Askwith highlighted the fan-centric ethos of Popular Demand, noting, “We began collaborating on ‘Fucktoys’ after observing an existing fan base expressing a desire for the film's distribution.” He further elaborated, “Fans consistently articulate their interests, what they seek more of, and what they are prepared to support. Popular Demand is committed to genuinely engaging with these communities, understanding the drivers behind their enthusiasm, and working collaboratively with artists and fans to realize these projects.”

Leland elaborated on the operational methodology of Popular Demand, stating, “Our process involves collaborating closely with creators, producers, intellectual property holders, and other partners engaged in new project development. We pinpoint the most suitable fandoms or communities for each project, deploy our team of fan engagement specialists to conduct audience research, and then utilize these insights to sculpt the project's development. For funding, we involve fans and brands early in the process to secure as much financing as possible, thereby affording the creative team maximum artistic autonomy and financial upside.”

The founding partners of Popular Demand also include Daniel Dominguez, serving as head of creative development, and Jacob Robinson. The company boasts an impressive advisory board featuring notable personalities such as actor Kristen Bell, director Alex Winter, Image Comics President and co-founder Todd McFarlane, music producer Ryan Lewis, Dr. Henry Jenkins, and executives from industry giants like YouTube, Skybound, Artists First, and CAA. Investment for Popular Demand has been secured from TMV and additional private investors.

“Fucktoys” is being produced by Timothy Petryni, with executive production credits going to Petryni and Sriram through their company, Trashtown Pictures. Heather Buckley of Black Mansion, Lizzie Goodman, and Jean Louis Droulers are also executive producers. Sarah Wielusz and Alex Hidalgo are co-executive producers representing Atypical Day. The studio has indicated that further projects and creative alliances will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

The establishment of Popular Demand signals a fascinating shift in the entertainment landscape, emphasizing the power and influence of fan communities. By prioritizing direct engagement with fandoms from the outset, Leland and Askwith are not merely creating content but fostering a more participatory and inclusive creative ecosystem. This model could potentially democratize content production, allowing niche interests to flourish and reducing reliance on traditional gatekeepers. The success of “Fucktoys” will be a crucial litmus test for this innovative approach, potentially paving the way for a new era where audience passion directly shapes the entertainment industry's future.
